Where To Stay In Siem Reap

Top travel tips for where to stay in Siem Reap, nothing but the best hostels for independent travellers or backpackers travelling on a budget.

There’s some magical news for all you gorgeous backpackers travelling to Siem Reap…

The hostel scene has erupted here over the last few years, leaving travellers scratching their heads over which one is the best place to stay.

Luckily for you…

Having just returned from Siem Reap, I have sieved through all the backpacker accommodation options in town and have whittled it down to the 5 best hostels for you to stay at; all of which are a very luxurious napping option for anyone travelling on a budget.

The chosen ones have been granted pride of place not just on the quality of the hostel amenities, but also the friendliness of the staff, atmosphere and overall joyousness of all the backpackers who were staying there at the time.

Right, so here are the latest hostel Hall of Famers in Siem Reap…

This hostel was my personal favourite in Siem Reap, and I fell in love with it for a number of reasons…

From the moment I arrived at reception, I immediately felt like part of a backpacker family. The staff go out of their way to make sure your stay is unforgettable. On the ground floor there’s a swimming pool surrounded by beanbags, an ideal place to park your behind and soak up some rays.

There are bars both downstairs and on the rooftop to make sure you don’t go thirsty, and it gets better…

The rooftop bar has been transformed into a beach, the staff putting their backs on the line to haul kilos of sand upstairs and create one of the most unique drinking spots I’ve seen.

This is where the backpacker festivities really get going in the evening, with free shots given out every hour on the hour, endless drinking games and plenty of themed nights. If you think you’ve got a liver of steal, it’s time to try and prove it by putting your country on the map, behold the one and only Mad Monkey ‘grenade’ world cup.

The hostel is a short stroll from Pub Street where the late night festivities get going, the bar staff will then escort you to the clubs and will party with you to the early hours.

The Mad Monkey also help you plan and book any backpacker tours you are looking to do while in Siem Reap.

A big shout out to all the artists who contributed to the hostel’s collection of graffiti. Some incredible artwork.

Love this place.

This hostel is a garden village in every sense of the word, a jack of all trades that is built on a huge plot of land. A very comfortable stay inside a chilled tropical arena that takes you away from the backpacker hustle and bustle of Siem Reap.

During the days, backpackers wander here to chill out in and around the swimming pool and garden area, which…

In the word’s of Step Brothers – “Has so much space for activities”! Whether you want to lounge around poolside on beanbags, test your acrobatics on the slack line or shoot some pool, Garden Village has got all the ingredients.

To break it down, my second favourite hostel feature is…

The only ever floating beer pong table I have come across during my travels.

And here comes Garden Village’s pier de la resistance…

A beach 5 a-side football pitch which stages a daily showdown between both locals and backpackers. Pohin, the owner, always gets involved and offers each player a free beer for every goal they score. Take a bow son.

The hostel has recently built a small rooftop bar, which is a great place to grab a drink in the evenings and cream your panties over the glorious Siem Reap sunset. There is also a poolside bar which serves up ice cold beer towers and cocktails.

If fortune is on your side, you’ll be staying in Siem Reap during one of the hostel’s famous pool parties.

A chiller’s haven indeed.

The backpacker party atmosphere in Siem Reap doesn’t stop. However, we all have those moments on the road when we need to catch some serious beauty sleep. If this is you, then Naga Angkor Budget Hotel is the place for you to stay.

The hotel sets all backpackers up in the perfect location amongst the action, but doesn’t bring the party in house. The rooms are up there with the most comfortable I had the pleasure of staying in during my time in Siem Reap.

The hotel is partnered with Mad Monkey which guarantees they pay huge attention to detail and make sure all your needs are fulfilled. I even had a TV in my room, regularly screening some weirdly entertaining local Cambodian shows.

Bori the barman at Naga is a spirited magician, his carefully concocted drinks will guarantee you have some very sweet dreams. Here’s a few to tickle your fancy…

Hands down, the best passion fruit mojito I have ever tasted. It’s like a tropical party in your mouth.

On special request, he will also pour you a round of his signature multi coloured rainbow shots. I’m yet to understand how he does it, you will have to do some research on this alcoholic witchcraft for me.

Uptown funk is certainly going to give it to ya’ here. 24/7. Funky Flashpacker doesn’t sleep, music blaring through the speakers all day and into the early hours of the morning. All the backpackers tend to chillax downstairs poolside during the day, with the staff waiting on you hand and foot.

If you’re wanting to soak up some of that Vitamin D during your stay, then saunter on up to the sun deck which is a great lounging spot. There’s a bar both upstairs and downstairs that make it their mission to see that your juice-box is never empty.

Feeling peckish?

The chefs have gone the extra mile to import over the comforts of home, the likes Heinz Beans and Ketchup, served up alongside some other stellar dishes.

Funky Flashpacker regularly hosts themed nights and some of the longest jaeger trains this side of Germany. The hostel staff certainly know how to throw a party and will guide you out onto Pub Street to dance your socks and pants of with you.

Moving forwards, the hostel has some grand plans to build an in-house nightclub on the top floor and eventually try to run itself as a self sufficient backpacker kingdom.

Keep an eye out for the flawless artwork around the white walled complex, see if you can find David Bowie, Walter White and Charlie Chaplin.
